Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
