Colombian Leader Says 'I Shall Take Up Arms Again' if US Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have escalated the volume in their verbal conflict, further raising strains between the two countries following American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has drug factories and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Rising Threats coupled with Claims

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump hinted at similar military action against Bogotá, claiming the nation faces serious problems and “run by a problematic figure who likes making cocaine and trafficking it to the United States."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the business.

A Strained Alliance

The country was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the fight against narcotics trade and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, yet ties have deteriorated significantly since Trump came to office.

The nation's narcotics trade is predominantly run by criminal organizations such as one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom demobilised after a landmark accord.

Petro's Firm Rebuttal

When asked whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me personally."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle decades ago, firmly denied the accusations. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"Trump speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he expressed in a post.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will turn into numerous insurgents in the mountains. And should they arrest the nation's leader, which many of the country holds in high esteem, they will provoke the powerful force of the people," Petro warned.

From Insurgent to Leader

He passed part of his youth belonging in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed that he never participated in combat. After demobilizing, he took part in drafting the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election president.

"I swore to abstain from using a weapon again ... but for Colombia I shall resume arms again," he vowed.

Heightened Measures and Widespread Opposition

Colombia's defense chief announced that the president’s personal security was strengthened.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, but voices spanning Colombian politics have denounced the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Economic Sanctions

American authorities cancelled the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged American soldiers to disobey unlawful commands. Months later, it placed economic restrictions against the president, his wife and several close collaborators.

At the same time the US was building up its forces near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted attacks on boats off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
